Sweater Dress Season: Styled 3 Ways

Sweater Dress: Amazon; also styled here

Temps in Napa are finally out of the 40’s and inching closer to the 60’s! It’s still chilly, but I’m soaking up every ounce of sunshine. It’s the perfect time for a sweater dress!

My husband recently saw someone wearing a sweater dress and had a very funny opinion about it. We were at brunch and a woman walked by wearing a very oversized sweater dress with boots. He said it looked like she rolled out of bed, stole her boyfriends sweatshirt and forgot her pants. LOL! Men don’t always *get* fashion (eye roll). Well, contrary to his opinion, I actually love sweater dresses!

I get what he was saying though, because they can look sloppy if you don’t style them right. Luckily, there are so many ways to make them look flattering!

First, choose a sweater dress that’s not too oversized or baggy to give you a more defined look. Second, add layers or accessories to give the outfit some structure and make it look intentional.

Combat boots: Target; Hat: CottonOn; Flannel: Walmart (only $10!)
Booties: Target; Denim jacket: Old Navy

Here are three ways I’d style this sweater dress (that don’t make it look like you just rolled out of bed – even if that’s actually true!)

  1. Dress it up a bit with some heeled boots and a coordinating belt. This look is super cute for going out to dinner or if you have any social events to attend!
  2. Pair it with a neutral pair of booties and top it off with a denim jacket. This style is truly an everyday look. It’s casual enough to wear running errands but it’s also cute enough to wear to lunch or hanging out with friends.
  3. Combat boots, a flannel, and a cap. The moody tones give the sweater dress a little edge, but you can easily swap the flannel color to brighten it up if you want! This look is perfect for running errands, especially with the cap so you don’t even have to do your hair.

A sweater dress can be worn on colder days, layered with leggings and a coat. It can also be worn on its own, as styled here, when it’s warm enough outside. I’d consider 60-degree weather warm enough to wear a sweater dress sans pants!

This sweater dress was an Amazon find, and I have a few others I love from Amazon as well. This particular one is warm but not as thick as some other cable knit sweater dresses I have, so keep that in mind when you’re dressing for the weather! I actually like the thickness of this one best because it’s not at all bulky, so it layers really well.

Which look is more your vibe? If you’ve tried a sweater dress before, I’d love to hear how you styled it.

Love always,

Raelene
