Sunny & 75: What I Wore on Vacation in Mexico

I recently traveled to Mexico with my husband and some of his family. It was a wonderful escape from the brisk temps in Napa. Below, I’m sharing a full review on everything I wore for four days in paradise. Bookmark this post for your next vacation!

Travel outfit:

Our original flights were booked round trip from LAX because we planned to stay with family in Southern California beforehand. Unfortunately, Covid had other plans. It became too risky to stay a week in LA and risk getting sick before we traveled, so we ended up adding a flight from SFO to LAX on top of our original schedule. In order to get to our LAX flight on time, we had to leave SFO at 6:00am (Napa at 4:00!).

All this to say, I opted for a comfy-cozy airport look. This Old Navy sweatshirt is cozy and a great neutral that pairs well with my $13 Walmart joggers. These pants are so easy to travel in because they are soft, stretchy and have pockets.

Night 1: Buffet on the beach!

I wore a black two-piece set. You might recognize this as THE Amazon outfit of last summer. I snagged it last year in two colors but didn’t end up wearing it on the trip I intended it for, and it worked perfectly for Mexico instead. Both colors are pictured below, but I went with black for our first night. The outfit is a light, crepe-like fabric, which feels very appropriate for vacation. The pants have a split hem, which makes them breezy and also vacay-appropriate. No pockets, but the waistband is elastic with a real drawstring, which felt like a win for a buffet dinner! Outfit comes in SO many colors (would’ve loved the bright orange for this trip) and runs TTS – didn’t even have to get the pants hemmed! I’m in my regular XS.

Day 1: Poolside + Wine Tasting:

Yes, I left Napa but still ended up wine tasting, lol. For our pool day, I wore a Shein bikini with a ruffled sleeve. The ruffle poked out from underneath the tank coverup, but the colors coordinated, so I went with it. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with swimsuits from Shein! They have great high waisted options and the styles I own have held up longer than a year already. Coverup is also Shein and would highly recommend. It’s a fun color and the movement of the fabric is flattering. Night 1 consisted of relaxing with an extended skincare routine (wish I’d brought my Jade roller) and room service dinner (seriously, the food was so good). These are the best travel PJs – super lightweight and easy to pack. I also packed this lounge set from Amazon for getting ready in the mornings or lounging in the room.

Day 2: Poolside margaritas:

This sun hat was my best friend. Four reasons why I love it: 1) it has a very large brim to keep the sun off your shoulders in the pool; 2) the top is open so you can wear your hair in a bun or ponytail; 3) it rolls up super small for packing; 4) it holds its shape if it gets a little wet in the pool. And can’t forget to mention the under $5 price – such a steal! Swimsuit was a last minute Amazon prime order and I liked it. It doesn’t come in XS, so I went with Small and the strapless top was slightly big if you’re small-chested like me, but it was manageable. The bottoms fit perfectly with enough coverage. Coverup was the souvenir I purchased from the Cabo beach vendor, but linked similar here.

Night 2: SAKKE hibachi dinner:

Loved the sushi here! I guess I was in a mood for matching sets at nighttime, because I opted for another two-piece set here. This Shein orange skirt comes with a matching halter wrap top. Both could easily be worn separately (in fact, I bought a solid orange crop top to use, but opted for the set). The set is a lightweight viscose fabric and both pieces are lightly lined. I went sans bra and used these sticky boobs with my go-to fashion tape. I have said it before (fashion hack explained here), but honestly, don’t use true “fashion tape” and buy this instead. Thank me later!

Day 3: Poolside:

We lounged by the pool until it was time for lunch at the bar where they had the football playoffs on TV. Another Shein swimsuit for the win! This orange bikini is a basic cut and I love that the straps are adjustable and the back has a clasp, while most other Shein swimsuits are pullover. I thought the bright orange went well with this fun palm print kimono. And of course, I wore my Shein sunhat.

Night 3: An outdoor dinner with a band:

This time I opted for a dress! It’s a cutout mini-dress in a colorful watercolor print from Shein. The fabric is polyester, but the weather at night was nice, so the fabric didn’t feel stuffy. I also wore this dress last year in Southern California summer heat, and it was fine then, too – the cutouts and length keep it breezy! This dress is fully lined with a zipper back and adjustable straps, and although it’s a short dress, the ruffled hem is long enough to let my husband twirl me around on the dance floor.

Day 4: Departure

I don’t have a photo of my last travel look because we woke up and ordered room service while we packed our bags. For the flight home, I wore my favorite black leggings. I’ve bought four colors of these Amazon leggings and they hold up so well. I paired them with the short-sleeve sweater top from this matching set. I didn’t want to wear the matching pants because they are a little long so they’d be dragging on the gross airport floor. That’s the best thing about sets though, they are versatile enough to use the pieces separately.

Accessories to note:

This purse was fantastic. I love a crossbody strap so I don’t have to worry about setting it down anywhere while we’re out. Love that the top has a full zipper closure. The size was great – it looks small but it’s loose, so it easily stretches to fit a ton of stuff – even a full size book. I carried mine & my husband’s phones, a small wallet, my favorite phone charger, chapstick, travel sunscreen, and sunglasses every day. I wore my favorite Ray Ban aviators but also brought a faux pair in case we went down to the beach where I’d risk losing them in the water. I also didn’t want to risk losing my real wedding rings, so I bought this as a dupe for traveling. I wore it in the pool and shower all weekend and it never turned my finger green. Lastly, I wore a claw clip like this one whenever I wanted my hair up or pulled back!

I hope these details give you some inspiration for what to pack if you have any upcoming trips! And I’d love to hear where you’re headed! One more thing to note, I was able to fit all this (plus some outfits I didn’t end up wearing) in only a carry-on, so don’t ever feel pressured to overpack to the point you need to check your bag. If you want tips on how to pack, let me know!

Love always,

Raelene
